Batacanââ¬â¢s Pinoy detective novel, Smaller and Smaller Circles, creatively presents the kind of society the Philippines has right now ââ¬â how, nowadays, negative it has become. It shows a theme on violence and abuse, the other things that go with them like motivation (anger, etc) and consequences (results), and gives the readers an idea about how unfair the society can be most of the time especially to those who are incapable of speaking for themselves. The novel starts off by presenting one face of violence in the story ââ¬â the killings. It tells us that crime happens to everyone. No one is invulnerable to crimes. It can be anyone around us: a pregnant woman, a businessman, a driver, a teacher, a student, an adult or a kid. In the story, children about twelve or thirteen whose genitals, faces and hearts were removed are victimized. (pages 5 12) The victims are ââ¬Å"children of poor families. â⬠(p. 13) The story is set in Payatas ââ¬â a place which is known for its poverty. Many people who have authority in the society tend to use their power in the wrong way. Government officials, instead of helping the people, make them suffer by corrupting the nationââ¬â¢s funds and fooling them around with their flowery talks. Policemen, instead of bringing bad guys into prison, commit crimes themselves like asking for bribes and ââ¬Å"lagayâ⬠. There are some cases in the Philippines where the police show the public someone ââ¬â the ââ¬Ëcriminalââ¬â¢ ââ¬â just to look good in front of the peopleââ¬â¢s eyes and to seem in control of everything. This is represented by Attorney Benjamin Arcinasââ¬â¢ character, the acting director of the National Bureau of Investigation who suddenly makes public a man named Carding who, according to him, handed over himself and confessed to everything. (chapters IX-XI) Policemen are supposed to imprison law-breakers and not forcefully bring them inside. If those who are given such power and responsibility practice their authority like this, there would be no more sense of justice in the country. Furthermore, Philippine policeââ¬â¢s ineffectiveness is presented in the novel as well. Quoting from the text: ââ¬Å"Unlike in the United States or Europe, Philippine police and law enforcement authorities do not compile statistics on missing persons on a nationwide basis. â⬠Worse, they seem to work just to earn more money. Continuing the quotation: ââ¬Å"Most people with a missing relative are referred to the media, and little police effort, if any, is expended toward following the cases up after that ââ¬â unless, of course, the victims are wealthy or influential. â⬠(p. 19, emphasis mine) The latter quoted statement gives us the idea that ââ¬Ësmallââ¬â¢ people, especially those below the poverty line, are not given the same treatment. If poor people complain, they are given less attention; actions to their cases are slow-paced. Worse, some do not bother complaining at all: ââ¬Å"Jerome and Saenz exchange looks. ââ¬ËDidnââ¬â¢t anybody complain? ââ¬â¢ The mechanic sighs and shrugs, and although he doesnââ¬â¢t say a word, they know what he would have said anyway: complain about what? The criminal, Alejandro Benitez-Carlos Jr. , was sexually abused by his homo P. E. high school teacher, Isabelo Gorospe who, as mentioned later in the story, became his first victim. The incidents of abuse shared by Emong Ricafrente, a former classmate and also a victim, is mentioned in chapter XXIII. This part of the story makes the readers realize that thereââ¬â¢s no more ââ¬Ësafeââ¬â ¢ place. Crimes happen anywhere ââ¬â in the streets, inside the school or even at home. To accomplish his plans, Alex Carlos, abuses his power as a dentist. He builds a good impression among his patients to keep himself from being suspected. This shows how a very ââ¬Ërespected and goodââ¬â¢ person can be a criminal. People trusted him. ââ¬Å"He comes to work early, lunches alone, and is always the last to leave at the end of the day. He has a perfect attendance record. â⬠No one thought he could commit such a crime. If people cannot assure someoneââ¬â¢s trustworthiness, how can there be trust? And if thereââ¬â¢s no trust, how can a society work properly? Violence gives birth to more violence. Bad things produce more evil things. Thatââ¬â¢s what F. H. Batacan tells her readers with this novel. For instance, letââ¬â¢s take the case of Alex Carlos. He was sexually-abused during the complex stage of his life ââ¬â high school. This deeply traumatized him and changed him all together. ââ¬Å"Emong nods. ââ¬ËHow could anybody expect him to go on? He was a mess. After a while, it was just him, him all the time, and we all knew. He couldnââ¬â¢t stand it when we looked at him, and he used to pick fights whenever he caught any of us looking at him. He would sit all the way in the back of the classroom, and soon he was all alone, he wouldnââ¬â¢t talk to anybody. When he had to, though, he would never look them in the face, it was so strange. â⬠(pp. 122-123, emphasis mine) And according to Alexââ¬â¢s father: ââ¬Å"He became rebellious, withdrawn. â⬠(p. 114) As mentioned, violence gives birth to more violence; crimes to more crimes. Alex, traumatized and in pain, was motivated to avenge himself. He killed his P. E. teacher, and the poor children who were too ordinary unlike him and who reminded him of his horrible past. And in page 114, his father even mentions ââ¬Å"He was trying not to cry, but he was trying even harder to keep himself from flying at me. From killing me. â⬠A criminal created a serial killer in the smart, clean and neat young Alex Carlos. The novel also presents another side of the criminalââ¬â¢s character. He did not really want to do those things. Quoting, ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t like it. I didnââ¬â¢t like any of it. I. Didnââ¬â¢t. Want. It. â⬠He was just too much affected and troubled by the abuse he had to go through. That instance in his childhood dramatically changed his life in the future. Everyone is given his/her position/ responsibility in the society and all must do their works properly, fairly. Justice is for everyone. Laws were created for the peopleââ¬â¢s better. Crimes are a serious matter. Results of these and of the investigations greatly affect the lives of those who are concerned. Such cases must be treated with care and passion because peopleââ¬â¢s lives are at stake. It should not be just a matter of exposure or selfish gain like how the case was to Joanna Bonifacio, a journalist, who just thought of the ratings of her famous program: ââ¬Å"The ratings will shoot through the roof. ââ¬
